FAQs

What do you use to dye your fabric?

I use a variety of plant-based elements for my dyes. I grow or gather some items locally, including black walnut, marigolds, dyers coreopsis, dahlia flowers, hibiscus flowers, and plum tree bark. I utilize food scraps such as onion skins and avocado pits. For items I can’t source locally, I purchase from a company called Maiwa out of Vancouver, BC who has close relationships with organic farmers around the world and are committed to sustainability and fair trade. Some of my favorite plant based dyes include cutch, madder root, indigo, and pomegranate.

For wall quilts, I utilize dye sources that have a history of lightfastness, meaning they are more resistant to fading.

Do you accept commissions?

Yes! If you would like to honor a memory or occasion with a unique landscape quilt, I would be happy to work with you. I can also work with you if you would like an existing design in a different size or color. For more information, visit the Custom Inquiry page.

How do I hang my new quilt?

All wall quilts will arrive with a hanging sleeve. Visit the Hanging your Quilt page for a detailed tutorial on hanging your quilt.

Can I wash my quilt?

If your quilt is displayed on your wall as a piece of art, I do not recommend putting it in the washing machine, as this may cause the fabric to shrink and distort and the colors to bleed. Quilts used as pillow covers, table runners, or blankets can be machine washed in cold water and a mild, pH neutral detergent (such as Seventh Generation Free & Clear). You can use a color catcher if you are concerned about colors bleeding. Hang or lay flat to dry. For more detailed information on caring your quilt, visit the Quilt Care page on my website.

Will the colors fade?

All colors will fade slightly over time especially if exposed to direct UV sunlight for extended periods of time. I take care to choose dyes and processes that have proven to produce the most lightfast results, minimizing the amount of color fading with proper care.

Do you teach?

I teach quilting classes online on Skillshare (this link will allow you to access all classes for one month free!) and in person at Bolt Fabric Boutique in Portland, OR. I am building a resource library for natural dyeing through my blog, and I’m working on developing a natural dye workshop. Sign up for my email newsletter to be the first to know of anything new!

Do you sell patterns of your designs?

I do have a couple of quilt patterns available for sale. I do not, however, have patterns available for any of my landscape quilt designs. I am planning to create a Skillshare class that teaches how to create your own landscape quilt in the near future. Stay tuned!
